The Lords Resistance Army rebels have allegedly carried out more brutal attacks in South Sudan, killing several civilians in the process. A senior official in south Sudan’s Western Equatoria State government, Colonel Joseph Ngere, told BBC yesterday that the barracks attack involved about 100 LRA rebels who burnt houses among other atrocities.
But in an interview yesterday, the UPDF spokesperson, Maj Paddy Ankunda said the army will not hesitate to attack LRA rebels should they dare enter Uganda. “We are prepared. Should they cross to Uganda we shall attack them directly,” Maj Ankunda told Daily Monitor by telephone, adding:“The only thing that will guarantee the LRA safety is to sign the peace agreement”.
The new attack on the South Sudan military base comes after Sunday Monitor reported that Joseph Kony’s LRA rebels had raided three villages near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo and abducted at least 50 children.
The fighting broke out despite pledges by the rebels that they would sign a peace deal with the Ugandan government.
